When moving, it’s understandable that you want to keep all the things going with you in good shape. They’re your prized possessions, and you’d like them with you in your new home. Sometimes, however, there are cases where some of your possessions are damaged in transit, and now you have to find out who would be liable for the damage. This is what your local movers would call transit coverage.
In this post, Around Town Movers discusses everything you need to know about transit coverage.
What Is Transit Coverage?
Transit coverage is the insurance coverage of an item or items during the move from one place to another. This covers the items in case they’re damaged during the transfer, but the area and limitations will be defined by the insurer’s policy.
Who Provides Transit Coverage?
It’s not actually the movers that provide the transit coverage. There are, however, some property insurance companies that offer transit coverage. It’s a good idea to contact one especially if you’re moving delicate and expensive items.
Who Do I Hold Liable for the Damage?
It’s the moving company’s responsibility to get your property from one place to another in one piece. In case any of your items is damaged or lost during the move, the moving company should be accountable. This is why most movers include additional fees for additional valuation, which means they’ll assume more risks for an additional charge. However, for you to be able to hold them liable, the property must have been damaged ONLY while it was still in the movers’ care. If this is the case, you have a 30-day period to submit your claim. Moving companies are advised to check if their clients have transit coverage to protect both the homeowner and the movers themselves from any liability.
Do I Need Transit Coverage?
While transit coverage isn’t exactly necessary for your move, it is advisable. This is so you and the moving company can avoid the legal mess that can comes from a damaged or lost item.
